Since hedgehogs were scarce in the U.S., the groundhog became the chosen creature for weather predictions.
The most famous Groundhog Day event takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow. If Phil sees his shadow, tradition says there will be six more weeks of winter. If not, an early spring is predicted.
